Wireless connectivity
Any of the systems that APC Technology provides can be adapted for wireless communication across a variety of mediums. Ideal for remote operations this option is fully integrated within the internal configuration of the system and is protected from the working environment. You are able to specify your requirements or simply provide APC Technology with a specification and we will provide and specify the required solution for you.

Camera Systems
APC Technology provides systems for use with industrial, Hazardous Location, marine camera and surveillance systems. Field Expandable I/O

Disinfecting keyboards made quick and easy

Held biennially in Singapore, this Airshow is one of the world's top aviation events and is the biggest aerospace and defence exhibition in Asia. Custom design rugged keyboards from APC Technology

APC Technology will be featuring a different product each month - exploring in-depth the capabilities of the product, including how it’s designed, manufactured, customised, and used in a work environment. This month’s feature is on APC Technology rugged computer keyboards.

Environment for keyboard operation
In factories the APC Technology keyboards can by hosed down with high pressure water hoses – and also high pressure water at high temperatures e.g. 60 degrees (IP69 Standard).

This means that we can make keyboards to tolerate most factory or industrial situations. All the APC Technology products are classed at IP65 and IP66 as standard. We can make them 67 and 68 which makes them submersible should your needs require that degree of waterproofing.

With regard to temperatures, keyboards will keep working in temperatures in excess of 70 degrees and sub-zero down to minus 20 centigrade. This is a design that suits “cold room” environments.
The most popular keyboard has a pointer built in so these ranges work for pointing devices as well.

Keyboards can be delivered with either cursor keys (up and down arrows) or a pointer which looks like a joy stick. This is an APC Technology design and it has no moving parts – it works by putting cross hairs of infra red light onto the display and as the shaft of the beam moves, it detects you have moved the shaft displacement in the infra red beams. PNZ infrared is the standard we use.

Connections enable the keyboard to join with your display, and these all work with standard commercial connectors. Many industrial computing situations include high shock and vibration issues and these can cause cables to fall out of connectors and so a custom-solution may be appropriate.

Construction method
APC Technology used to build all our products in mild and stainless steel, but we discovered that it’s best to use a single material as standard – therefore, APC Technology computers are now all built in stainless steel.

This is a full metal construction – there’s no plastic in the design. It will have either flying leads for connection or built-in connectors.

Keyboards can be desk mounted, cabinet mounted, panel mounted or shelf mounted. We can make them into fold-away or slide-away fixtures which is helpful for situations where space is at a premium, for example in a submarine.

For one client, we found that the chairs the computer operators sit on can only move from left to right because they are on rails - they have to arrive at a precise point exactly in front of the keyboard. We were able to align the display with their chair rail to effect perfect positioning.

We can build a keyboard out of any lightweight material except plastic (which is expensive) – so it could be aluminium if that suits your situation.

Our range of keyboards include desktop keyboards and panel mount keyboards, illuminated keyboards and rackmount keyboards.
Remember, these are not touch-type keyboards like the ones on a classic computer – they are industrial and so are designed to input a few characters or perhaps to select a field from a list of options.

Examples of keyboard customisations
With regard to custom made designs – APC Technology prides itself on our catch-phrase “if you can think of it, we can make it.”

We use the same standard electronics behind the custom front design and so we agree a design sketch of the custom layout which is worked up to your needs.

The keys can be custom printed with words relevant to your processes for example

Keyboard electronics design
Behind each keyboard is an electronics panel. This can take up to 144 keys and each one can be programmed to any code you require. For example the image on the key can be any word you want and the key can be programmed to connect to different places and deliver commands to your equipment and machinery.

We are in the process of upgrading our keyboard electronics to offer the option of fully reprogrammable keys. This will rollout through the range during early 2012 but is available immediately for custom requirements.

Tears in the Jungle – A Children’s adventure to save the orang-utan

For the last couple of years APC Technology has played a small part in assisting two brothers with a desire to help save the endangered orang-utans in Borneo and Sumatra. One of the brothers, Daniel, has cerebral palsy and is mostly confined to a wheelchair, but this does not stop him doing what is right, especially through the use of an APC Technology Industrial joystick, the PCIM Industrial Joystick which assists him in the use of his computer.

So far through the production of their book entitled ‘Tears in the Jungle’ and through a number of school visits, meetings with the Australian Prime Minister John Howard and many other meetings and visits Daniel and William have raised over $600,000 for this save the orang-utan program.
